  1.       LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - O.J. Simpson's houseguest, Brian ''Kato'' Kaelin, was back on the witness stand Thursday in the double-murder trial describing a volatile relationship between the former football star and his ex-wife.

  3.     On cross examination by defense lawyer Robert Shapiro, Kaelin told the court he had heard Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson have verbal fights on numerous occasions, but he said he never saw the battles turn physical.

  5.     Kaelin also described Simpson as a loving father who was involved with his family even after he and Nicole had split up.

  7.     Prosecutors wrapped up their direct examination of Kaelin Thursday morning, with Marcia Clark launching into a series of hostile questions concerning Kaelin's possible relationship with Nicole.

  9.     Clark repeatedly asked Kaelin about the reasons he did not move in with Nicole Simpson at her condominium on Bundy. He testified O.J. Simpson had told him it ``wasn't right'' that Kaelin live under the same roof with Nicole Simpson while she and O.J. Simpson were trying to reconcile.

  11.     But Clark tried to get Kaelin to admit that what Simpson was really worried about was a possible sexual relationship between Kaelin and Nicole Simpson.

  13.     Kaelin also testified under cross examination that he saw a small black bag on the driveway of Simpson's estate the night of June 12, which the prosecution contends disappeared after Simpson went to Chicago on a business trip.

  15.     The prosecution has suggested the knapsack was stuffed with bloody clothing Simpson wore when he murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman outside his ex-wife's Brentwood townhouse on June 12.

  17.     But Kaelin said under cross examination that the bag could have been an athlethic satchel containing golf balls.

  19.     Kaelin also testified that Simpson often practiced his golf swing in the front yard of his home. The defense has said that Simpson was chipping in his yard at the time the murders were committed.

  21.     Early Thursday, Judge Lance Ito overruled a defense objection to questioning concerning remarks Kaelin may have made to a friend concerning Simpson's demeanor on the night of June 12.

  23.     Simpson has pleaded innocent in the stabbing deaths of his ex-wife and her friend Ron Goldman on the night of June 12.

  25.     Kaelin's testimony is critical to the defense because he is believed to be the last person who saw Simpson at his home the night of the murders and one of the first two people to see him after.
